Ban Weapons in Outer Space

Space weapons are not only needless and de-stabilizing, they pose enormous risks for a potential space arms race - at a cost of nearly one trillion dollars, and if used would threaten to destroy the huge and expensive civilian space infrastructure that has become indispensable for modern life and commerce.

In their book War in Heaven: The Arms Race in Outer Space, Helen Caldicott and PNA Chairman Craig Eisendrath make the case for extending the 1967 Outer Space Treaty to include all space weapons.  The Department of Defense (DoD) is currently spending billions of dollars to develop such weapons and is on the edge of testing and deployment.  PNA believes that our Congress needs to fully investigate DoD’s plans, deny funds for testing and deployment, and strongly advocate a treaty banning weapons in outer space.  And we should hold Presidential candidates to the same standard.
